What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation of spinal joints and adjacent structures that may lead to progressive and ascending bony fusion of the spine. Peripheral joints are less often affected; however, hip and shoulder joints (often considered as axial manifestaions) are involved in one third of cases. Inflammatory lesions of extraarticular organs, such as the eye and heart, may occur in Ankylosing spondylitis.
