Balantidiasis is the infection of intestine which is caused by the bacterium, Balantidium coli, a single celled parasite (ciliate protozoan).
Cysts are the parasite stage responsible for transmission of balantidiasis.

Balantidiasis disease is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Balantidium.

Because pigs are an animal reservoir, human infections occur more frequently in areas where pigs are raised.
Diagnosis of Balantidiasis
Diagnosis of balantidiasis, as with other similar diseases, can be complicated, partly because symptom may or may not be present. The diagnosis of balantidiasis may be considered when a patient has diarrhea combined with a possible history of recent exposure to amebiasis through travel, contact with infected persons, or anal intercourse.

Treatment of Balantidiasis
Patients with balantidiasis are treated with prescription medication, typically consisting of a ten day course of either tetracycline or metronidazole. Alternative drugs that have proven effective in treating balantidiasis include iodoquinol or paromomycin.
