Fibromyalgia is diagnosed mainly in middle-aged white women, although it has been observed in children and the elderly. It is recognized primarily in persons from the middle and upper socioeconomic strata. although one Canadian population-based study suggests that relatively low levels of education are associated with increased risk for fibromyalgia. We have long suspected that fibromyalgia occurs less frequently in individuals from nonwhite ethnic groups, but information validating this assertion is just emerging (from Mexico, from the India subcontinent, and from Israel). Population-based studies in North America and Europe have not carefully evaluated ethnic group differences in prevalence of fibromyalgia. However, one study performed in Wichita, Kansas, revealed that "nonwhites" comprised 11% of the persons identified as fibromyalgia cases.
