What is Asendin and for what Asendin is used?

Asendin is an antidepressant of the dibenzoxazepine class. Asendin is a medicine that helps tp lift mental depression. Asendin helps prolong the mood-lightening effect of any released noradrenaline and serotonin. This helps relieve depression.

How to Take Asendin

Take Asendin exactly as prescribed by health care provider. Swallow the capsules with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

What are the Side Effects of Asendin -

Like other medicines, Asendin can cause side effects. Some of the more common side effects of Asendin include

  • difficulty breathing
  • eye pain
  • fainting spells
  • fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
  • fever with increased sweating
  • loss of bladder control, or problems passing urine
  • muscle stiffness or problems with movement
  • pale skin
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • skin rash or itching (hives)
  • swelling or tenderness of breasts or testicles
  • unusual and uncontrollable tongue and chewing movements
  • smacking lips or puffing cheeks
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin

Side effects of Asendin Drug that usually do not require medical attention are:

  • confusion or nervousness
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • increased appetite and weight gain
  • increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • nausea, vomiting

Asendin intraction with other drugs:

Tell your prescriber or health care professional: about all other medicines you are taking including non-prescription medicines; if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol; if you smoke; or if you use illegal drugs. These can affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Warnings and precautions before taking Asendin :

  • Asendin capsule must not be used during pregnancy as it may cause harmful side effects to the unborn child. Seek medical advice from your doctor.
  • This medicine may cause low blood sodium levels (hyponatraemia), which can result in drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching or convulsions. Consult your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms while taking this medicine.
  • Talk with your physician or pharmacist if you are taking other medications along with Asendin .
  • Breast Feeding - Mothers who are taking Asendin and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctor.
  • Since there is a significant prevalence of this syndrome associated with the use of neuroleptic drugs, and since there is no known effective treatment, chronic use of these drugs should generally be restricted to patients for whom neuroleptics are known to be effective and for whom there is no alternative therapy available with better risk acceptability.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Asendin . Alcohol may increase drowsiness caused by Asendin . It may also increase the risk of seizures.
  • The safety and efficay of this medicine have not been studied in children and adolescents, hence it is not recommended for use in these age groups.

What if Overdose of Asendin ?

If you think you or anyone else taken overdose of Asendin , immediately telephone your doctor or contact your local or regional Poisons Information Centre Seek medical attention immediately. You may need urgent medical attention.

What if Missed Dose of Asendin ?

If you miss a dose of Asendin medicine and you remember within an hour or so, take the dose immediately. If you do not remember until later, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage Conditions for Asendin :

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep the medication away from the children.
