Onycholysis
Information - Causes, Sign & Symptom, Cure, Treatment of Onycholysis
What is Onycholysis
?
Onycholysis is the painless separation of the nail from the nail bed. In onycholysis the nails become loose. They may even detach from the nail bed. When not held firmly in place, the nails are rapidly damaged and debris collects beneath them. Onycholysis can be a sign of skin disease, an infection or the result of injury, but most cases are seen in women with long fingernails.
Spontaneous separation of the nail plate starts at the distal free margin and progresses proximally. Less often, nail plate separation may begin at the proximal nail (base) and extend to the free edge.
Causes of Onycholysis
Onycholysis condition is usually self limiting. Here are some causes of Infected Onycholysis:
- fungal nail infection
- Endogenous, exogenous, hereditary, and idiopathic factors
- Contact irritants
- trauma
- moisture are the most common causes of onycholysis
Treatment and Cure of Onycholysis
- Patients should avoid trauma to the affected nail, and keep the nail bed dry.
- For nail abnormalities due to ingrown toenails, wear shoes that don't squeeze the toes together, and always cut the nails straight across along the top.
- Patients should avoid exposure to contact irritants and moisture.
- Patients should clip the affected portion of the nail, and keep the nails short.
- For pale nails, clubbed nails, blue nails, distorted nails, white lines and horizontal ridges, or white hue under the nails, consult your health care provider to determine the proper way to treat the underlying cause of the problem.
- Patients should wear light cotton gloves under vinyl gloves for wet work.
