A Guide to Vaginal Surgery
Mention cosmetic surgery and many people will think of breast alterations first, facial surgery second, and perhaps liposuction if pressed to come up with a third. Mention vaginal surgery and you'll often get a confused look or an awkward reaction. But there's no reason why squeamishness should stop any woman considering the range of options for vaginal surgery: indeed, for many women surgery could help increase confidence and reduce anxiety about this most intimate of areas. Labiaplasty
The best known procedure is a labiaplasty, sometimes also called labia reduction. It involves reducing the size of the vagina's inner lips, medically known as the labia minora. These vary greatly in size among women and change over time, particularly after giving birth. It is common for the inner lips to protrude beyond the outer lips (the labia majora): while this is not unnatural, some women may dislike the visual effect. In some cases women find the lips cause discomfort during sex or other physical activity; in other cases they can lead to a lack of confidence.
The procedure is available with either local or general anesthetic and often takes under an hour. The post-surgery effects usually only last a couple of weeks at most and are more a case of discomfort than pain. The procedure generally involves dissolvable stitches and leaves small scars.
Vaginoplasty
Another procedure is vaginal tightening or vaginoplasty. This is designed to treat the problem of the vaginal cavity becoming looser after childbirth, a condition that can leave women with less sensation during sex, potentially causing a loss of confidence and even relationship problems.
Something many people don't realise about the condition is that it isn't simply a case of the vagina being looser: it can also mean the woman looses strength and control in the tissues and muscles that support the vagina, further affecting their sex lives.
Vaginal tightening is again a quick procedure with both local and general anesthetic feasible options. It simple involves removing some of the excess skin, along with skin that has been stretched during childbirth. Again it can cause some increased tenderness and sensitivity for a week or so.
Pubic Liposuction
A third problem treatable with vaginal surgery is where a woman has a noticeably large bulge atop the pubic bone. This is caused by fatty tissue that, although natural, can appear disproportionate, particularly after losing weight. While every woman is of course different, some women may find this a particular embarrassing problem and feel self-conscious in public as it may be noticeable when wearing tight clothing. The solution is pubic liposuction, known medically as vulvar lipoplasty.
The procedure itself is virtually identical to other forms of liposuction: indeed it can even be carried out as part of a combined procedure with other bodyparts. The surgery involves inserting a thin tube known as a cannula. The excess fat is then removed with a medical device that can be likened to a vacuum. As with the labia reduction, the surgeons use dissolvable stitches that leave only a small scar.
