What is Whooping cough (pertussis)?
Whooping cough is also called as
pertussis. It is a contagious respiratory disease.
Whooping cough is a children's disease which begins as a cold, with a runny nose and a hacking cough that is worse at night.
Pertussis can be serious, even life-threatening, in infants and children. Why Pertussis is called Whooping Cough??..................
name "whooping cough" comes from the noise that the sick person makes at the end of a coughing fit, as s/he gasps for air; it sounds like a whoop or a crow.

Causes of Whooping cough (pertussis)
Whooping cough is a highly infectious disease caused by bacteria, and spread through direct contact or coughing. The person is infectious before the symptoms begin, which is often when the bacteria are passed on, until about four weeks into the illness. The bacteria leading to whooping cough cause an increase in mucus production.
Whooping cough is caused by the B. pertussis bacterium.
Whooping cough is a response to colonization of the lungs and throat with Bordetella pertussis bacteria.
- When inhaled, pertussis bacteria enter and infect the airways, causing inflammation.
- The infection is easily passed from person to person through the droplets released into the air by coughing (or by sneezing ).
How is pertussis diagnosed?
In adults and adolescents, symptom of whooping cough can be mild, often not recognized as being pertussis. Since pertussis is less expected after childhood, adults and teens may be mis- diagnosed with bronchitis or asthma.
Treatment and prevention of Whooping cough (pertussis)
A whooping couph should do away from all foods which produce phlegm like milk, ghee, sweets, rice, refined flour products, sugar and lentils. His diet should consist of oranges, musk melon, tomatoes and rasberry. Vegetables like spinch, cabbage, gourds, should be taken in a boiled form without addition of any condiments. Wholemeal bread and roasted potatoes could also be given. The patient of pertussis should be encouraged to fast for a couple of days with the onset of the symptoms of whooping cough. The fasting period should be followed by a week of living on oranges only.
Another precaution is to see that the child does not develop costiveness.
Whooping Cough - Herbal home remedies
- Black cohosh also helps loosen and expel mucus. Take 3 cups of tea or 20 drops of tincture in water daily.
- Alternate hayseed packs with horseradish or mustard poultices. To prevent burning skin, leave hot poultices on for ten minutes maximum.
- Add fir infusion or 10 drops of thyme oil or tea tree oil to bath water to speed healing of damaged membranes.
- Fennel stimulates the cilia of the respiratory passages to help remove mucus. Drink 3 cups of fennel tea daily.
